Show Jumping
To be read by D.C.'s, Trainers, Parents and Competitors

It is the responsibility of competitors to ensure the correct tack is used in conjunction with 2006 Rules.  All tack should be properly maintained, correctly fitted & clean when presented for Tack Inspection.
If a Tack Steward finds any gadget/bit or piece of saddlery that in his/her opinion is cruel, the Chief Steward, who has absolute discretion to forbid its use and to ban the respective animal from competition, will be called.
Saddlery which is not allowed for competition may not, upon penalty of elimination, be worn on the day of competition.  Actions deemed cruel will eliminate the combination of horse & rider. 
Rider only may school & ride their horse at competitions.

Bridles:
Plain leather only recommended.  Synthetic bridles must have leather strap at buckle end. 
Bitguards
Permitted, but must be smooth

Bitlessbridles/Hackamores

Not allowed in competition.

Martingales

Running martingales are allowed.
Standing martingales for SJ, only one of which may be worn at the same time, fitted to the cavesson noseband. Rubber/leather stops must be fitted.

Saddles
Black or brown of plain English type,
with full tree and 2 (or more) buckled
girth. Synthetic saddles allowed.
No coloured saddles, no felt saddles.
No racing saddle less than 16" in
length, min 2.5 kg.
Stirrups
If safety stirrups are used they must have correct rubber bands and peacock leathers. Stirrups must fit correctly, i.e. 2 cm space on either side of the foot. Stirrup bar must be down.

Numnahs and Saddle cloths/pads - white or dark colour only. Any piping round the edge should be of the same colour.  No logos or writing.  

Reins

Running/draw/check forbidden.
Lungeing in side reins is permitted but no other gadgets are allowed.

Twine
Forbidden, except for grass reins.
Studs
Care should be taken when using studs
Spurs
Blunt only, made of metal without rowels or sharp edges.  If curved, the curve must be downward and the shank straight back. 

Under 12’s competition – spurs not allowed.
Junior & Intermediate competition – up to 2 cm. spurs allowed.  Members competition – up to 3.5 cm. spurs allowed.

Cross-Country ,Show Jumping and Polo:
Bits: 
No leather or wooden mouth-pieces allowed. Additional covering on any part not allowed. 
Optional except that
a)  Twisted snaffles and Elevators are not allowed.
b) Bits with fixed protrusions below the mouthpiece, to which either two reins attached to top ring and any other ring, OR single rein to rounding OR to top or second ring. Gag snaffles permitted with two reins correctly fitted.

Chin Straps
Must be fastened at all times when mounted (on penalty of elimination
Hair Nets
Long hair must be tied-up in hair net
Body Protectors
Correctly fitted (2cm below rib cage) must be worn in show jumping training & competition
Medical armbands

Recommended.  Photo identification required on Medical armbands,
Body-rings/studs/Jewellery/Buttonholes - are forbidden.

Stocks
Traditional self-tied stocks may be worn.  Stocks must be secure.  PC tie recommended for SJ
Jodhpurs/Breeches
only cream/white/beige
Gaiters
Black leather polished (not suede), may be worn with black boots
Sweatshirts

Branch colour (one colour only) or black or navy over body protectors are permissible for show jumping phase for u.12, junior and intermediate. Long sleeves required.  Seniors must wear jackets for SJ.

Double bridle
permitted for Intermediate and Members only.

Saddlery

Bits:

No leather or wooden mouth-pieces allowed. Additional covering on any part not allowed.  Bits must be plain snaffle with a straight bar or single joint in the middle.  The mouthpiece must be smooth all round.  Bits of nylon or other synthetic material are permitted, but must only be used in their manufactured condition without any addition to/or on any part.  Plastic bits with a cylindrical joint are not permitted, nor are Bitless Bridles including Hackamores.  Fulmer snaffles are not allowed. (See attached sheet).

Bridles:
Plain leather only recommended.  Synthetic bridles must have leather strap at buckle end. 
Bitguards:
Permitted, but must be smooth, must be black or brown.

Bitless bridles/Hackamores:

Not allowed.
Bandages:
Should only be worn where necessary and not for decoration.  They must be uniform in colour and correctly fitted
Blinkers:

Browbands:
Plain leather only recommended, coloured Browbands are permitted
Breastplates
Permitted
Martingales:
The only martingales permitted are Irish, Standing, Bib or Running, only one of which may be worn at any time.  Standing martingales may be attached only to a cavesson noseband or the cavesson portion of a ‘flash’ noseband fitted above the bit.   Rubber/leather stops must be fitted.
Nosebands:

Only one is permitted – Cavesson, Drop, Grakle, or Flash. (Sheepskin nosebands not allowed). 

Saddles:

Black or brown of plain English type, 2 (or more) buckled girth. Any saddle without a tree, or those employing a half tree on front arch only, are prohibited.  Synthetic saddles allowed.  No coloured saddles, no felt saddles.  No racing saddle less than 16" (40.6cm) in length, min (5lbs) 2.8 kg.

Stirrups:

If safety stirrups are used they must have correct rubber bands and peacock leathers.  Stirrups must fit correctly, i.e. 2 cm space on either side of the foot. Stirrup bar must be down.

Numnahs. Saddle cloths/pads:

White or dark colour only. Any piping round the edge should be of the same colour.  Branch logo and/or Branch name only allowed.

Reins:

Running/draw/check are forbidden.  For safety reasons, knotted reins should be attached to the bit by a buckle or billet.  Neckstraps and grass reins are not allowed at Championship level.
Lungeing in side reins is permitted but no other gadgets are allowed.

Twine
Forbidden, except for grass reins.
Studs:

The use of studs is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.  If worn, road studs may be used.  Great care should be taken when using studs.

Spurs
Not allowed.
Whips
Not allowed.

Dress

Jodhpurs
Cream or beige only.
Shirts:
Collared, white or blue with long sleeves (which are not to be rolled up), with Pony Club tie.
Footwear:

Standard riding boots or Jodhpur boots with smooth, fairly thin sole, and a well-defined square heel should be worn.  No other footwear allowed.

Badges

No metal badges allowed.

Jewellery & watches, body piercing

Not allowed.

Hair
Long hair should be secured appropriately
Gaiters:

Black leather polished (not suede), may be worn with black jodhpur boots.  Chaps (incl. half chaps) not allowed.

Sweatshirts:
Branch colour or navy or black allowed.  Bibs will be worn at Area & Championship competitions.
Hats:

Only hat/skull caps to PAS015 or EN1384 or ASTM F1163 (with SEI) or Snell E2001 are allowed.  All hats must bear the CE mark and a quality symbol, either BSI Kitemark or the SEI Global symbol.  Hats must be worn with the chinstrap correctly fastened at all times when mounted including Prizegiving.  Hat covers must be dark blue or black.  The no. 5 or 6 rider, when taking part unmounted, must also wear a hat (fastened).
